The Todaro Paradox Revisited

چکیده

The Todaro Paradox Revisited The Todaro Paradox states that policies aimed at reducing urban unemployment are bound to backfire: they will raise rather than reduce urban unemployment. The aim of this paper is to reexamine this paradox in the context of efficiency wage and search-matching models. For that, we study a policy that consists in decreasing the urban unemployment benefit. In an efficiency wage model, we find that there is no Todaro paradox while this is not always true in a search-matching model since a decrease in the urban unemployment benefit can increase both urban employment and unemployment. Bertrand’s Paradox Revisited: More Lessons about that Ambiguous Word, Random

The Bertrand paradox question is: “Consider a unit-radius circle for which the length of a side of an inscribed equilateral triangle equals 3 . Determine the probability that the length of a ‘random’ chord of a unit-radius circle has length greater than 3 .” Bertrand derived three different ‘correct’ answers, the correctness depending on interpretation of the word, random. Here we employ geomet...

Levinthal’s Paradox Revisited, and Dismissed

This article is concerned with the so-called Levinthal’s paradox. It will be argued that many have sought a “solution” to Levinthal’s paradox, where in fact, the “solution” already appeared in Levinthal’s original articles. Most of the subsequent suggested “solutions” were inadequate solutions to a non-paradox. It is shown that the discovery of strong hydrophilic forces not only dismisses the L...

On the Real and Apparent Positions of Moving Objects in Special Relativity: The Rockets-and-String and Pole-and-Barn Paradoxes Revisited and a New Paradox

The distinction between the real positions of moving objects in a single reference frame and the apparent positions of objects at rest in one inertial frame and viewed from another, as predicted by the space-time Lorentz Transformations, is discussed. It is found that in the Rockets-and-String paradox the string remains unstressed and does not break and that the pole in the Barn-and-Pole parado...

The Transportation Paradox Revisited

The transportation paradox is related to the classical transportation problem. For certain instances of this problem an increase in the amount of goods to be transported may lead to a decrease in the optimal total transportation cost. Thus this phenomenon has also been named the more-for-less-paradox. Even though the paradox has been known since the early days of linear programming, it has got ...
